INTIMIDADES DE SHAKESPEARE Y VICTOR HUGO

|
| Don Quijote winner, Fribourg 2009 | Directed by: Yulene Olaizola, Mexico 2007, 80 min. An old lady lives in Mexico City, at the corner of Shakespeare and Victor Hugo Street. She shares a singular tale that occurred to her in later life: her encounter with Jorge Rios, an attractive and exceedingly mysterious young man...
The base of this documentary appears to be a charming situation in which an idiosyncratic elderly lady confides in her granddaughter, the filmmaker. Just when we start wandering about the meaning of this home movie, it takes a surprising turn towards the portrait of an absent man of baffling nature – angel or demon? Yulene Olaizola has succeeded in creating an almost Hitchcockian little masterpiece – which remains a documentary nonetheless! Her film has garnered a spate of awards in Latin America and elsewhere.
